A good quotation can move mountains. They can motivate, inspire, and stimulate new conversations.

Sometimes quotations are called quotes. They include citations, excepts, extracts, clips, and blurbs (a word made famous in Spy Magazine in the 1990s). Depending on context, quotes can also be lines, passages, cuts, or cuttings.

Pretty much anything less than 100 words makes for a decent quote. In fact, a lot of social media consists of potential quotes.

Over the years, the quote sites I visit have become less usable and useful. They are replete with ads, or they create obstacles for copying and pasting, or they are hard to navigate. Some quote sites have bad stock photos with baked in bad fonts! Further, many quote sites do not indicate a quote’s source. Did Einstein say “The theory of relativity is mostly about my mishpocha”?

So, what is TypeQuote?

TypeQuote serves up one real quote a day. The focus will be on my own personal interests: art, design, human development, mystery, technology, and moral philosophy.

My objective is to gather interesting and unique quotes over time so that you can save them, serve them up cold, or share them around. Part of the job is to indicate where these quotes originated or where they emerged.

In July 2026, I changed the code slightly. Before, the site had one quote associated with one date. This forced me to come up with a quote every single day for the rest of my life, which was simply not sustainable. Instead, the site serves up one randomized quote from the database to you every day.

Built with a greener web in mind

I designed TypeQuote to use very little energy and therefore to have a small carbon footprint. Very few fonts and other assets are served each time. The homepage receives an A+ from the Website Carbon Calculator, meaning it is cleaner than 94% of all pages on the internet.

The web is for all of us

The web is meant to be accessible to everyone, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. This site was designed with WCAG Level AA Guidelines. If you are having trouble accessing this site for any reason, please let me know.

Not spyware

TypeQuote does not use cookies. Google Analytics is not installed on the site. There are no marketing partners. The site uses Fathom Analytics, which is GDPR compliant, to look at overall demographic trends. Fathom respects individual digital privacy.

Who made TypeQuote?

  • Design: I’m a Montréal-based designer working to build a more humane, ethical, and accessible web. I publish a weekly newsletter about design and designers called Dear Designer.

  • Development: This site was lovingly coded by Filippa and Vincent of Calotte (now Compact), a sustainability-friendly development shop in Montréal. I also updated this site using Claude Code.

  • Typefaces: Typequote features the following typefaces: GTF Rouleur by Good Type Foundry, Domaine Text by Klim Type Foundry and GT Alpina.

  • CMS: Behind the scenes, this site is powered by Kirby, a powerful but simple content management system that stores content as files. It’s a fast, excellent CMS for most small sites.
